Description

The Seeed Studio S-Multi Soil MTEC-01B is a professional-grade multi-depth soil sensor that simultaneously measures soil moisture, temperature, and electrical conductivity (EC) at four discrete depths — 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, and 40 cm — from a single probe. Based on the internationally standard dielectric constant method, the sensor delivers stable, accurate readings of true volumetric water content across virtually all soil types, with high resistance to salinity interference. Data is transmitted via the RS485 Modbus-RTU protocol for direct integration with PLCs, data loggers, SCADA systems, and IoT gateways. The 795 mm anti-corrosion plastic probe is IP68-rated for permanent in-ground installation, includes a 10 m cable with 5-pin aviation connector, and features multi-directional misconnection protection on power, ground, and signal lines. Ideal for precision agriculture, greenhouse cultivation, smart irrigation, scientific research, and large-scale environmental monitoring deployments.

Dielectric Constant Sensing Internationally recognised method for measuring volumetric soil moisture. Less affected by soil salinity than traditional resistive sensors, delivering high-accuracy readings (±3% moisture, ±0.5°C temperature) across sandy, loamy, and clay soil types.
IP68 Anti-Corrosion Construction Reinforced plastic shell with anti-aging properties and resistance to acidic and alkaline soil conditions. IP68 rating supports permanent in-ground installation including long-term water immersion without leakage or sensor drift.
Universal RS485 Modbus-RTU Output Modbus-RTU over RS485 (default 9600 bps, slave address 49) connects directly to PLCs, data loggers, SCADA systems, and IoT gateways including the SenseCAP Sensor Hub 4G Data Logger. Configurable slave address (0–255) supports multi-sensor daisy-chain bus deployments.

Technical Integration

The S-Multi Soil MTEC-01B communicates via RS485 Modbus-RTU with Function Codes 0x03 (read holding), 0x04 (read input), 0x06 (write single), and 0x10 (write multiple). Default communication parameters: 9600 bps, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, slave address 49 (decimal). Twelve read registers (0x0000–0x000B) deliver temperature, moisture, and EC values for each of the four depths simultaneously. The 5-pin aviation connector supports direct integration with the Seeed SenseCAP Sensor Hub 4G Data Logger for cellular IoT deployments, or with any RS485-compatible PLC, SCADA system, or IoT gateway. The 10 m waterproof cable enables flexible deployment of the data logger or junction box at a convenient surface location. Installation Notes

Installation requires drilling a vertical hole with an earth auger at the target measurement location, preparing a fine soil slurry from the excavated material, and grouting the sensor in place by slowly rotating it downward until the 0 cm reference line is flush with the ground surface. Do not pull the sensor upward during installation, as this introduces air pockets that affect measurement accuracy. Allow the slurry to stabilise before commencing data collection.
