Which Eastron SDM630 Should You Buy? Modbus V2, MCT and LoRa Variants Compared

shopioT blog banner: Which Eastron SDM630 should you buy, direct, CT and LoRaWAN variants with MID approval

The Eastron SDM630 is one of the most-installed three-phase energy meters in Europe, and the name covers several different instruments. Pick by two questions. How does it connect to the load: directly up to 100 A, or through current transformers? And how will you read it: over a wired Modbus line, or wirelessly over LoRaWAN? Answer those and the right variant falls out of the table below, starting at €79.

direct-fed Modbus, CT-operated Modbus, CT-operated LoRaWAN
MID
certification on all three, so readings are billable in the EU

Who this is for Electricians, panel builders, integrators and facility teams buying three-phase metering for sub-metering, tenant billing, EV charging or solar installations, and anyone comparing SDM630 versions before placing an order.

The Three SDM630 Versions We Stock

Variant Connection Readout Price
SDM630-Modbus V2 Direct-fed, up to 100 A per phase RS485 Modbus RTU + pulse €99
SDM630MCT CT-operated (1 A / 5 A secondary) RS485 Modbus RTU + pulse €79
SDM630MCT-LoRa CT-operated (1 A / 5 A secondary) LoRaWAN EU868, wireless €139

The direct-fed V2 suits new panels where the supply passes through the meter and the total load stays under 100 A per phase. Above that, or in any live retrofit, use a CT-operated version: clamp-on transformers go around the existing cables and the supply never gets interrupted. Pick the LoRa version when pulling an RS485 cable back to a control room is impractical, which in occupied buildings is most of the time.

MID: the Difference Between Monitoring and Billing

Every SDM630 we sell carries MID approval under the EU Measuring Instruments Directive. That approval is what makes a reading legally valid for charging a tenant or a customer. A meter without it can still tell you where energy goes, but its numbers will not hold up in a billing dispute.

⚠️
Settle the billing question before you order Certification cannot be added to an installed meter. If there is any chance the readings will appear on an invoice, buy MID now. Our post on sub-metering for tenant billing covers what that means in practice.

Sizing the Current Transformers

A CT-operated meter is only as good as its transformers. Match the CT primary rating to the circuit: our Eastron ESCT-T split-core CTs come in 100 A, 150 A, 200 A and 250 A primaries with a 1 A or 5 A secondary, from €18 each. Split-core matters for retrofits. The core hinges open and clips around a live conductor, so nothing gets disconnected during installation. You need one CT per phase, three per meter.

Reading It Remotely

The SDM630MCT-LoRa sends its registers over LoRaWAN out of the box; it just needs a gateway within reach. The Modbus versions can join the same wireless network through a Milesight UC100 controller (€45), which polls the meter over RS485 and uplinks the readings. That route is worth knowing when you already own Modbus meters, or when one UC100 can serve a whole row of them in the same cabinet.

Smaller circuits have their own family: the single-phase SDM230-LoRa (€89, 100 A direct) covers individual tenants, and the SDM530-LR (€159) adds a relay for remote disconnection. The whole range lives in our Eastron collection.

Stock, Delivery and Support

The stock figure on each product page is live. Orders ship tracked across the EU, and our engineers in Nicosia answer wiring and register-map questions before you buy, which beats discovering a mismatch after the panel is closed. For bulk and project orders, the CyRIC IoT team prepares formal quotes; details are on the FAQ page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which SDM630 should I buy for tenant billing?

Any of the three, since all carry MID approval. In an occupied building the SDM630MCT with split-core CTs is the usual choice because it installs without a supply shutdown; add a UC100 or pick the LoRa version for wireless readout.

What is the difference between SDM630-Modbus V2 and SDM630MCT?

The V2 is direct-fed: the circuit's conductors pass through the meter, up to 100 A per phase. The MCT reads through external current transformers instead, which handles larger loads and retrofits on live installations.

Do I need special CTs for the SDM630MCT?

You need CTs with a 1 A or 5 A secondary, one per phase, with a primary rating that covers the circuit's maximum current. The Eastron ESCT-T split-core series (100 A to 250 A) is the matching part and clips over live cables.

Can the SDM630MCT-LoRa be pre-configured for my network server?

Yes. Tell us at order time which network server you run (The Things Stack, ChirpStack or another LNS) and the meters arrive provisioned and ready to join.

Does shopioT deliver Eastron meters across the EU?

Yes, orders ship tracked to EU countries, stock levels on the product pages are live, and the CyRIC IoT team quotes bulk and project orders.

Two Questions, One Right Meter

Direct or CT. Wired or wireless. Those two answers map every project onto one of the three variants above, and MID certification comes with all of them, so the billing question never comes back to bite. If a case does not fit neatly, send us the panel details and an engineer will size it with you.
